Quick answer

On your first visit to New York City, get around by subway and pay with a card or phone through OMNY, which has a weekly fare cap. To save on hotels, consider Long Island City or Astoria (Queens), Brooklyn, or Jersey City, just minutes from Manhattan. A sightseeing pass is worthwhile if you plan to visit 3 or more paid attractions. A 4-night trip costs $1,000 to $2,200 USD per person, including flights.

Transportation

The subway runs 24 hours a day. Tap your card or phone on the OMNY reader to pay: after 12 rides in 7 days, the rest of the week is free.

From JFK, take the AirTrain + subway; from LaGuardia, take the free Q70 bus or the M60; from Newark, take the AirTrain + NJ Transit train. These options are much cheaper than a taxi.

Affordable Areas and Sightseeing Passes

Long Island City and Astoria in Queens, Williamsburg or Downtown Brooklyn, and Jersey City offer cheaper hotels than Midtown, with direct subway or train service to Manhattan in 10 to 20 minutes.

Passes such as CityPASS, Go City, or The Sightseeing Pass bundle observation decks, museums, and cruises. Plan your visits: if you only want 1 or 2 attractions, buy individual tickets. The Staten Island Ferry is free and passes the Statue of Liberty.
